GATE Scholarship 2026: Monthly Stipend, Eligibility Criteria & Online Application
Pursuing higher education is a dream of many engineering graduates/students. A higher degree like an M.E., M.Tech, or Ph.D. from a top institution increases the chances of getting placed in good organizations like Google, Microsoft, Apple, Adobe, Siemens, etc. Also a higher degree like an M.E., M.Tech, or Ph.D. from top institutions enhances the valuation of the CV of students. Despite all these benefits, not a lot of students want to pursue higher education.
One of the main reasons for this is that a lot of students consider pursuing higher education as an extra financial burden, which is absolutely wrong, as nearly the whole cost of pursuing an M.E., M.Tech, or Ph.D. is nearly free in India. Yes, you have heard it right. Let us look at how. For admissions into M.E., M.Tech, and Ph.D. programs, candidates need to clear the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, popularly known as the GATE exam, with a good rank. After clearing the GATE, candidates have to appear for the interview in different institutions as per their ranks. Once the candidate clears the interview, he/she can get admission into the desired course by paying the fee. Those candidates who enrol in higher education after clearing GATE are eligible for the GATE scholarship. The scholarship amount varies according to the course. In this blog, we will look at the monthly stipend, eligibility criteria, and online application of the GATE scholarship 2026. This blog would be helpful for all those candidates who want to know more details about the GATE scholarship 2026.

GATE Scholarship 2026
The Graduate Aptitude Test of Engineering is one of the most important exams for engineering graduates/students who are looking to pursue higher education like an M.E., M.Tech, or PhD from top technical institutions in India and abroad. A GATE score is also helpful in getting shortlisted for the recruitment of various PSUs and other organizations. Students who are preparing for GATE 2026 can join the MADE EASY classroom course to enhance their preparation. Those students who can’t join the classroom course can join the MADE EASY live online course for GATE 2026, or they can also enroll in the MADE EASY recorded video course for GATE 2026.
GATE is a wonderful opportunity for aspirants who want to pursue higher education or work in PSUs. As said above, pursuing higher education in a technical domain is nearly free, or the candidates have to pay a very minimal amount. Let us look at how.
The total fee of M.Tech (per semester) in IITs/IISc Bangalore is nearly Rs. 30,000-40,000, except for hostel, mess, and other charges (this may vary from institute to institute). Candidates who pursue M.Tech from AICTE-approved institutes after clearing GATE would be eligible to receive a stipend of Rs 12400 per month. However, this stipend is known as a teaching assistantship in various IITs, where GATE-qualified M.Tech students need to help in a UG course or set up labs for UG students for 8 hours per week. Some of the tasks that TAs (teaching assistants) generally have to perform are:
- Help the professors in organizing lecture content and preparing tutorial problems.
- Guide the students in solving tutorial problems.
- Help the professors in setting up exam quizzes/exam papers.
- Evaluate exam answer sheets.
These are some of the duties that TAs generally perform. However, it varies from professor to professor and course to course.
The stipend for PhD students after qualifying GATE is Rs 31,000 per month for the first two years and Rs 35,000 per month from the third year.
Students pursuing M.Tech and PhD degrees from AICTE-approved institutes after clearing GATE are eligible to receive a monthly stipend. These stipends/scholarships are provided by the Ministry of Human Resources and Development. These stipends are provided till the completion of the course (for M.Tech courses, the stipend is provided for 24 months or till the completion of the course, whichever is earlier).

GATE 2026
Till now, we have seen all the important details related to the GATE scholarship. But till now we haven’t seen the most important condition for getting a scholarship, i.e., a valid GATE score.
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, popularly known as GATE, is one of the toughest exams for engineering graduates/students. It is jointly conducted by the 7 IITs and IISc Bangalore. Every year, lakhs of students appear in 30 different papers of GATE. The majority of them belong to engineering streams. This is because a higher degree like M.Tech, M.E., PhD, etc., adds a lot of weightage to the CV of engineering graduates.
It won’t be an exaggeration to call GATE the Gateway of Opportunities. This is because GATE provides a lot of opportunities to engineering students/graduates. Some of which are listed below.
- Candidates can pursue M.Tech/M.E. from top technical institutes like IITs, IISc, NITs, etc., after clearing GATE at a very minimal fee or maybe for free.
- Candidates can pursue PhDs from top technical institutes like IITs, IISc, NITs, etc., after clearing GATE.
- Candidates can also enroll in top foreign universities like NTU, NUS, Berlin University, and others on the basis of the GATE score.
- Lots of PSUs shortlist/recruit candidates for the post of engineers on the basis of GATE scores.
- Lots of state engineering departments also recruit candidates on the basis of their GATE score.
- Candidates have the opportunity to work in research organizations like BARC on the basis of their GATE score.
These are some of the opportunities candidates can get after clearing the GATE exam. But here comes the most important part. How to clear the GATE exam? As said above, it is one of the most difficult exams for engineering students; therefore, students need conceptual clarity and good practice. However, lots of students don’t have strong conceptual understanding of their engineering subjects; as a result, most of the students can’t clear the GATE exam or are unable to get their desired results.
