SSC JE Recruitment 2019: Detailed Analysis

Since the last date for submission of online applications for SSC JE recruitment 2019 was due on 25 February 2019, probably all the interested aspirants have already sent in their applications for SSC Junior engineer. Since then, the aspirants have been apprehensive as well as curious regarding a number of aspects like the SSC JE exam date, SC JE syllabus, SSC JE salary, SSC JE cutoff, SSC JE result date, etc.

Staff Selection Commission will hold an open competitive examination for recruitment of Junior Engineers (Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, and Quantity Surveying & Contracts) for various Departments/ Organizations in the Government of India. The exam will be held in two stages.

Tier-1 will be conducted from 23rd September 2019 to 27th September 2019. While Tier-2 will be conducted on 29th December 2019 as per the latest updates of SSC. The posts are Group B (Non-Gazetted), in Level- 6 (Rs 35400-112400/-) of pay matrix of 7th Central Pay Commission.

 

SSC Junior Engineer Post Details:

A number of posts in various departments are expected to be filled through this examination. A total of 1601 vacancies are available for the following departments.

  • Central Water Commission
  • Central Public Works Department (CPWD)
  • Department of Posts, Military Engineer Services (MES)
  • Various Je posts in Farakka Barrage Project
  • Border Road Organization
  • Central Water and Power Research Station
  • Directorate of Quality Assurance (Naval)
  • Directorate of Quality Assurance (Naval)
  • National Technical Research Organization (NTRO)

*Only male candidates are eligible for the posts of Junior Engineers in the Border Roads Organization.

Process for SSC JE Recruitment 2019:

All the candidates who have sent online applications for SSC JE recruitment 2019 and whose applications would be found in order will be called to appear in the Computer Based Examination. Admission Certificates for calling candidates to appear in the Computer Based Examination as well as all subsequent stages of examinations will not be sent by post. Admission Certificates for all stages of the examination will be issued online on the websites of concerned Regional/ Sub-Regional Office of the Commission. Candidates are advised to regularly visit the websites of the SSC-HQ (i.e. https://ssc.nic.in) and concerned Regional/ Sub-Regional office of the Commission i.e. the website of Regional/ Sub-Regional Office under whose jurisdiction the examination centers opted by the candidate is located.

Minimum qualifying marks in Paper-I and Paper-II are as follows:

UR: 30%

OBC/ EWS: 25%

Others: 20%

Based on the normalized marks scored in the (Paper-I) i.e. Computer Based Examination, SSC JE cutoff will be decided and candidates will be shortlisted, category-wise, to appear in Paper-II.

Based on the performance in Paper-I + Paper-II, SSC JE result will be declared and candidates will be shortlisted for Document Verification, however, final selection and allocation of Ministries/ Departments will be made on the basis of the performance of candidates in Paper-I + Paper-II and the preference of Posts/ Departments exercised by them at the time of Document Verification.

Candidates must note that the posts of Junior Engineers in BRO have stringent requirement of physical and medical standards including Physical Efficiency Test. Examination of such physical and medical standards will be conducted after the final selection of candidates by BRO. If a candidate fails in such tests, his candidature will not be considered subsequently for any other post/ department. Candidates are therefore advised to thoroughly go through these requirements after thoroughly studying the SSC JE eligibility and give their considered preference of posts.

SSC JE Exam Pattern:

The Examination will consist of two Papers i.e. Paper-I (Computer Based Examination) and Paper-II (Descriptive Type). Details of these Papers are as follows:

In both Paper-I and Paper-II for General Engineering, the candidate will be required to attempt only the part as per option is given in the application form filled by the candidate. In other words, the candidates appearing for the post of Junior Engineer (Civil), Junior Engineer (Quantity Surveying & Contracts) should attempt Part A (Civil & Structural) of Paper-I and Paper-II and the candidates appearing for the post of Junior Engineer (Electrical) should attempt Part-B (Electrical) and the candidates appearing for the post of Junior Engineer (Mechanical) should attempt Part C (Mechanical) of Paper-I and Paper-II failing which his/ her answer sheet (Paper-II) will not be evaluated.

There will be negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer in Paper-I. Candidates are, therefore, advised to keep this in mind while answering the questions.

Candidates are allowed to bring their own Slide–Rule, Calculator, Logarithm Tables and Steam Table for Paper-II only. They are not allowed to use such aids for Paper-I, though.

Answer Keys will be placed on the Commission’s website after the Examination, before the declaration of SSC JE results. Candidates may go through the Answer Keys corresponding to their Test Form and submit representations, if any, within the time limit given by the Commission.

SSC JE Syllabus:

The standard of the questions in Engineering subjects will be approximate of the level of Diploma in Engineering (Civil/ Electrical/ Mechanical) since both diploma holders and degree holders are eligible to apply for this post of SSC Junior engineer. All the questions will be set in SI units. The details of the SSC JE syllabus are as given below:

Paper-I:

General Intelligence & Reasoning:

The Syllabus for General Intelligence would include questions of both verbal and non-verbal type. The test may include questions on analogies, similarities, differences, space visualization, problem-solving, analysis, judgment, decision making, visual memory, discrimination, observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning, verbal and figure classification, arithmetical number series, etc. The test will also include questions designed to test the candidate’s abilities to deal with abstract ideas and symbols and their relationships, arithmetical computations and other analytical functions.

General Awareness:

Questions will be aimed at testing the candidate’s general awareness of the environment around him/ her and its application to society. Questions will also be designed to test knowledge of current events and of such matters of everyday observations and experience in their scientific aspect as may be expected of any educated person. The test will also include questions relating to India and its neighboring countries especially pertaining to History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General Polity, and Scientific Research, etc. These questions will be such that they do not require a special study of any discipline.

General Engineering (Civil & Structural, Electrical, and Mechanical):

Part-A (Civil Engineering): Building Materials, Estimating, Costing and Valuation, Surveying, Soil Mechanics, Hydraulics, Irrigation Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Environmental Engineering. Structural Engineering: Theory of Structures, Concrete Technology, RCC Design, Steel Design.

Part-B (Electrical Engineering): Basic concepts, Circuit law, Magnetic Circuit, AC Fundamentals, Measurement and Measuring Instruments, Electrical Machines, Fractional Kilowatt Motors and single-phase induction Motors, Synchronous Machines, Generation, Transmission and Distribution, Estimation and Costing, Utilization and Electrical Energy, Basic Electronics.

Part-C Mechanical Engineering): Theory of Machines and Machine Design, Engineering Mechanics and Strength of Materials, 15 Properties of Pure Substances, 1st Law of Thermodynamics, 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, Air standard Cycles for IC Engines, IC Engine Performance, IC Engines Combustion, IC Engine Cooling & Lubrication, Rankine cycle of System, Boilers, Classification, Specification, Fitting & Accessories, Air Compressors & their cycles, Refrigeration cycles, Principle of Refrigeration Plant, Nozzles & Steam Turbines. Properties & Classification of Fluids, Fluid Statics, Measurement of Fluid Pressure, Fluid kinematics, Dynamics of Ideal fluids, Measurement of Flow rate, basic principles, Hydraulic Turbines, Centrifugal Pumps, Classification of steel.

The syllabus for engineering disciplines is the same for part-2 and the detailed syllabus can be read from the official notification.

SSC JE Results

Results for paper-1 would be announced probably in October 2019 or so since SSC JE exam date for paper-2 is tentative in end of December 2019. The selection for subsequent exam stages would be based on merit after normalization of obtained marks. Although in case of a tie, that is in cases where more than one candidate secures the equal aggregates marks in Paper-I + Paper-II, the tie will be resolved by applying the following methods one after another:

  • Total marks in Paper-II.
  • Date of birth, with older candidates, placed higher.
  • Alphabetical order of the names of the candidates.
