What is the GATE Exam?

It is a national-level exam that opens doors to MTech, ME and direct PhD admissions at top institutes like NITs, IITs and IIITs. Moreover, one can also land a PSU job in ONGC, NTPC, BHEL, DRDO and ISRO through GATE. 

The GATE exam is organised by a committee of senior faculty from IISc Bangalore and seven IITs. It is guided by the National Coordination Board under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. For 2027, IIT Madras is the organising institution. 

GATE 2027 Eligibility Criteria: Qualification Required 

According to the GATE Exam Eligibility Criteria, students studying in their 3rd year of UG engineering program are also allowed to apply. In short, the GATE 2027 Eligibility Criteria now follows a minimum qualification pattern of 10+2+3 (ongoing).

  • Students currently enrolled in the 3rd year or higher of a BE/BTech/BPharm program. Those who have completed the degree can also apply. 
  • Students currently in 3rd year or higher of a BArch (5-year) program or graduates of the same. 
  • BSc (Research)/BS students in their 3rd year of higher or graduate
  • Students pursuing or holding an MSc/MA/MCA or equivalent master’s degree 
  • Candidates enrolled in or having completed an integrated ME/MTech program
  • Candidates in the 3rd year or higher of an integrated ME/MTech or Dual Degree program (5 years, after diploma 10+2) 
  • Students in the 3rd year or higher of an integrated MSc or Int. BS-MS program 
  • Candidates who have cleared Section A (or equivalent) of exams such as UPSC or AMIE 

GATE Exam Age Limit 

A common doubt among aspirants is regarding the GATE Age Limit. The good news is that there is no upper age limit to appear for the GATE exam. Candidates of any age can apply as long as they meet the academic requirements. So if you are worried about being “too old” to attempt GATE, you can put the concern to rest. The GATE 2027 Eligibility Criteria is based purely on educational qualifications, not age. 

Candidates from Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce or Arts backgrounds are eligible. They must meet the qualifying criteria mentioned above. The exam is not restricted to engineering graduates.

GATE Exam Syllabus and Pattern Overview 

While preparing, it also helps to get familiar with the GATE exam syllabus structure. GATE 2027 will be conducted for 30 subject papers. Candidates can also opt for a combination of two papers as per availability. The exam is entirely objective in nature. General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics are fixed in most papers.
