Commonly known as BPSC, the Bihar Public Service Commission has been recruiting skilled assistant engineers (AE) from civil and mechanical engineering through examination. According to the official notification, the Bihar Public Service Commission released 118 vacancies in June 2024 and has now closed the online application window. Overview of BPSC

BPSC is a government created body that selects candidates for civil services jobs in the Indian state, Bihar. Some of the key examinations conducted by BPSC are combined competitive examination, assistant engineer   examination, judicial services examination, lecturer and professor examination, assistant prosecution officer examination.

BPSC AE exam pattern

BPSC AE exam 2024 comprise of two stages:

  • Written exam
  • Interview

Examination Mode: Offline

Marking Scheme: 1 mark will be awarded for each correct answer, while 0.25 marks will be deducted for each incorrect answer.

Basis of selection: Appointment to the post of Assistant Engineer  (Civil/Mechanical) will be done by calculating the marks obtained in the written examination (objective) conducted by the Selection Commission and the preference of the work done on the basis of contract.

The written examination will be of six papers, out of which 04 papers will be compulsory and 02 papers will be optional.

The first 04 papers i.e. General English, General Hindi, General Studies and General Engineering Science will be objective. There will be two optional papers in objective form, which will be separate for Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Only the papers of General English and General Hindi will be qualifying, in which it will be mandatory to obtain minimum 30 marks in each, that is, evaluation of other papers will be done only after obtaining the prescribed minimum marks in both the papers separately. If minimum marks are not obtained in General English and General Hindi paper, the candidature will not be considered.

BPSC AE exam 2024- Educational qualification

  • Must have a degree in Civil Engineering/Mechanical Engineering from any Indian University/Institute (A.I.C.T.E. Approved) or
  • Degrees obtained only in regularly conducted technical courses from deemed universities (deemed universities) recognized by the University Grants Commission will be valid and not in technical courses conducted through distance education. Degree obtained in courses.
  • Must be an associate member of the Institution of Engineers or has passed Branch ‘A’ and ‘B’ examination from the Institution of Engineers, India or equivalent examination to Branch ‘A’ and ‘B’ from an institution recognized by the Institution of Engineers, India. Must have passed and obtained another degree.

BPSC AE exam 2024- Syllabus

  • General Studies– The General Studies paper will include information on topics and experiences related to current events and daily observations and their scientific aspects. This paper will cover scientific, social, economic and political questions and will focus on the development of engineering science, including research and innovative changes that are important for technological issues in various engineering disciplines.
  • General engineering science– Mechanics of Solids, Off-Wet Engineering Materials and Methodology of Construction, Engineering Economy and Management, Transport Phenomena, Energy Convergence, Environmental Engineering/Survey/Mechanical Workshop Measurement in Power Workshop Instruments, Elementary Engineering which are common to various disciplines of Engineering for all branches (Detailed Syllabus visit official notification).
  • Civil Engineering 1– Structure Analysis, Structure Design and Soil Mechanics – and Foundation (Detailed Syllabus visit official notification).
  • Civil Engineering 2- Hydrology and open system flow of water sources (Hydrology and Water Resources (Open Channel Flow)) Design of hydraulic structure (Design of hydraulic structure) Transportation Engineering (Transport Engineering) Department of Public Health Engineering (Detailed Syllabus visit official notification).
  • Mechanical Engineering 1- Structural Analysis, Structure Design and Soil Mechanics and Foundation (Detailed Syllabus visit official notification).
  • Mechanical Engineering 2- Principles of Machines, Machine Design, Material Efficiency, Engineering Materials, Production Engineering, Industrial Engineering, etc. (Detailed Syllabus visit official notification).
  • Electrical Engineering 1- Electrical circuits, electromechanical principles, material science (electrical materials), electric steam, etc.
  • Electrical Engineering 2- Elements of computation, power-driven devices and systems, control systems, electronics and communication systems, etc.

Merit list: Candidates having experience of working on the post of Assistant Engineer (Civil/Mechanical) on contract basis, who fulfill the eligibility criteria for recruitment in this cadre, will be given preference in selection by giving additional marks as follows.

The merit list of the candidates will be prepared on the following basis:

Preference Marks
Preference for marks obtained in the written examination conducted by the Commission 75 marks
Maximum preference for working on contract basis (5 marks for every working year with a maximum limit of 25 marks. Obtained after  multiplying the number of working days for a part of a year by 5 and dividing it by 365) Proportional marks will be added). 25 marks
Total marks 100

 

Age Limit: Minimum 21 years as on 01.08.2024

Maximum Unreserved (Male) 37 years
Backward Class /Extremely Backward Class (Male and Female) and Unreserved (Female) 40 years
Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribe (Male and Female) 42 years

 

*The age of retirement is fixed at 60 years.
