BARC Training School: Detailed Training Procedure
India’s Premier nuclear research facility, BARC, the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre is headquartered in Trombay, Mumbai, Maharashtra. It is a multi-disciplinary research center with extensive infrastructure for advanced research and development covering the entire spectrum of nuclear science, engineering and related areas. Dr. Homi Bhabha established the BARC Training School to cater to the manpower needs of the expanding atomic energy research and development program. Bhabha said, “When Nuclear Energy has been successfully applied for power production in, say a couple of decades from now, India will not have to look abroad for its experts but will find them ready at hand”. Dr. Bhabha emphasized on self-reliance in all the fields of nuclear science and engineering.
BARC is also the mother of the R&D institutions like IGCAR, RRCAT, VECC, etc., which carry out pioneering research on nuclear and accelerator technologies and industrial establishments such as NPCIL, NFC, ECIL, etc., spearheading nuclear power production, materials technology, electronics & instrumentation.
Table of Contents
Recently BARC was in the news as the BARC’s Bhabha Kavach will now protect the CISF. It is the lightest level III plus bullet proof jacket (6.8 Kgs nominal weight) available in India. The jacket is based on indigenous hot pressed boron carbide and carbon nanotube technologies. Along with this BARC has also developed new technology for treating municipal sewage. As a result of radiation treatment all pathogenic microorganisms, in the sludge is brought to a level that they can’t multiply further and the treated sludge is safe for human handling.
BARC Scientific Officer Recruitment
The official notification for the post of scientific officer in BARC was recently released. The post calls for candidates from engineering and science fields to be recruited as scientific officers in BARC. Recruitment of Scientific Officers (Scientists and Engineers) is through two major programmes – OCES and DGFS, conducted by the BARC Training Schools.
- Orientation Course for Engineering Graduates and Science Post Graduates (OCES)
- DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme (DGFS)
Selection:
The Selection to both OCES/DGFS is a 2-step process:
- Screening is the first stage to short-list candidates
- Selection Interviews of the short-listed candidates.
The screening process is based on two alternative methods:
(a) Online Test: It will be conducted in all of the nine eligible Engineering disciplines and in the five eligible Science disciplines.
(b) GATE Score: Candidates will be screened in for Selection Interview on the basis of a valid GATE-2016 or GATE Score.

- Orientation Course for Engineering Graduates and Science Post Graduates (OCES)
Open to both Engineering Graduates and Science Postgraduates, the OCES is the flagship program of the BARC Training School.
Training Objectives
The OCES training program is aimed at providing all the candidates or Trainee Scientific Officer (TSO) with the necessary facilities and opportunities to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge in R&D related to Nuclear Science & Technology. The course curriculum includes various smaller programmes like the foundation, core, advanced and elective courses, mini-projects etc. in several disciplines.
The Course workshop mainly includes classroom lectures, practical training and project work. This is divided into three trimesters and is completed in one-year time duration. Evaluation of the TSOs is done on a regular basis through various examinations and assignments.
The OCES program is recognized for the award of Post-Graduate Diploma and as coursework for the award of M. Tech./M. Phil./Ph.D. degree of the Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), an aided institution of the Department of Atomic Energy and a Deemed to be University under Section 3 of the UGC Act.
More than 9000 officers have graduated from the BARC Training Schools since their inception.
Training Schools
BARC has various training institutes for various course, the OCES Programs are conducted at BARC Training Schools at the locations listed below
- BARC Training School at Mumbai
– Engineering, Design, Development, Operation, and Maintenance of Nuclear Reactors.
– Research in frontier areas of Basic and Engineering Sciences - BARC Training School at Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam

Successful Completion and Placement
After the completion of the training, all the TSO who score a minimum of 50% aggregate marks are declared to have passed the course successfully. Successful TSOs will be posted as Scientific Officer ‘C’ in one of the DAE units.
Posting of various Training Scientific Officer in DAE unit is based on the requirements of DAE and the TSOs merit, at the end of the OCES program. A small number of successful TSOs may also be posted in the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB).
- DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme (DGFS)
Many professionals look for an advanced degree in order to follow a particular career path, for such individuals BARC has initiated the DGFS. DGFS inducts engineers at M. Tech./M. Chem. Engg. level in collaboration with eight IITs viz. Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Roorkee, BHU-Varanasi and also NIT-Rourkela and ICT-Mumbai. The course strengthens the research education in premier institutes of the country in the areas of DAE.
During the course the M. Tech. project work is carried out under the supervision of two guides, one from IIT and the other from DAE. Keeping in view the requirements of scientific officer in DAE the topics for M. Tech./M. Chem. Engg. projects are proposed by the DAE guides and the M. Tech./M. Chem. Engg. specialization of the concerned DGFS Fellow.
Four-Month Orientation Course for DGFS Fellows (OCDF): In order to get complete knowledge and exposure which is otherwise not provided in the M. Tech./M. Chem. Engg. curriculum, DGFS Fellows undertake a four-month Orientation Course (OCDF) at the BARC Training School, Mumbai after successful completion of their M. Tech./M. Chem. Engg. programs. However, on completion of the M. Tech./M. Chem. Engg course, the candidates are absorbed in DAE as Scientific Officers
Selection: For the DGFS all the Engineering Graduates and Physics Postgraduates who have secured admission in M. Tech/M. Chem. Engg. in select Institutes and have also excelled in the Selection Interviews for the Training School program are permitted to pursue their M. Tech./M. Chem. Engg. degrees at these Institutes while retaining their employment in DAE.
After the successful completion of their post graduate course and training the DGFS fellows are enrolled and posted in one of the following units of DAE:
- a) BARC, Mumbai
