RRB JE Exam Pattern 2026: An Overview
Before getting into subject-wise topics, it helps to understand the selection process as a whole. The RRB JE Exam has four stages:
- CBT-1 (screening stage)
- CBT-2 (main stage, used for final merit)
- Document Verification
- Medical Examination
Only marks scored in CBT-2 count towards the final merit list. The CBT-1 score is used mainly for shortlisting candidates.
RRB JE CBT 1 Syllabus and Exam Pattern
The RRB JE CBT 1 syllabus is common for all engineering branches- Mechanical, Civil, Electrical and others. It covers four sections:
| Subject | Questions |
| Mathematics | 30 |
| General Intelligence & Reasoning | 25 |
| General Awareness | 15 |
| General Science | 30 |
| Total | 100 |
The RRB JE CBT-1 Pattern is simple. Check out the RRB JE Exam Pattern given below:
| Particulars | Exam Pattern |
| Total Questions | 100 |
| Marks carried by a question | 1 mark each |
| Exam Duration | 90 minutes |
| Negative Marking | ⅓ marks deducted for every wrong answer |
Since Mathematics and General Science together make up 60 of the 100 marks, prioritising these two subjects while working through the RRB JE syllabus pays off well in this stage.
RRB JE CBT 2 Syllabus and Exam Pattern
CBT-2 is where the real technical evaluation happens. The RRB JE CBT-2 syllabus includes the following:
- General Awareness
- Physics & Chemistry (10th level)
- Basics of Computers and Applications
- Basics of Environment and Pollution Control
- Technical Abilities (branch-specific- Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, etc.)
The RRB JE CBT 2 exam pattern consists of 150 questions to be attempted in 120 minutes, with the same ⅓ negative marking rule as CBT-1. General Awareness, Physics & Chemistry, Computer Applications and Environment together are common for all branches. Technical abilities are branch-specific and carry the highest weightage in CBT-2 as it directly tests core engineering concepts of your discipline.

How to Prepare: RRB JE Study Plan and Strategy
A well-structured RRB JE Study plan is what separates candidates who clear the exam from those who don’t. Check out the approach given below:
- Map the syllabus first– go through the RRB JE Syllabus topic by topic before opening any book, so nothing gets missed.
- Pick the RRB JE Books– standard, exam-oriented references for Mathematics, Reasoning and your branch’s technical subjects.
- Use reliable RRB JE Study materials– updated notes, topic-wise PDFs and formula sheets.
- Join RRB JE Test series– Regular full-length mocks build speed and expose weak areas early.
- Practice daily– Solving a RRB JE practice set every day sharpens accuracy, which matters given the negative marking.
- Consider structured guidance– a good RRB JE course or RRB JE online coaching can save preparation time with a ready-made roadmap instead of scattered self-study.
On average, focused RRB JE preparation of 4-6 months is enough for most candidates, provided you put in consistent hours. The exact timeline depends on your engineering background and how familiar you are with the topics in the RRB JE syllabus.
MADE EASY offers structured RRB JE courses for classroom and online coaching. This includes updated study materials and test series aligned with the latest RRB JE syllabus. It helps aspirants build both conceptual clarity and exam temperament for CBT-1 and CBT-2.
