UPSC ESE is a three-tier exam, namely prelims, main, and personality test. Candidates having a 4-year engineering degree in any stream can appear for this exam; however, the exam is conducted only in 4 engineering streams, viz., civil, mechanical, electrical, and electronics engineering. Candidates who have completed their engineering in other streams must choose one of the above-mentioned streams to appear in ESE.
ESE Prelims is a 5-hour examination (2 hours for general studies and engineering aptitude and 3 hours for engineering disciplines) with a total of 500 marks {(200 marks: general studies and engineering aptitude) and (300 marks: engineering disciplines, viz., civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics, and telecommunications)}.
Those who clear the prelims exam are eligible to appear in the main examination. ESE main is a conventional type exam with a total time of 6 hours (3 hours for each paper) and 600 marks, which is divided into two papers, each of 300 marks.
Those candidates who clear the mains examination are called for a personal interview.
