Railway Group A Officer Eligibility Criteria 

For the post of Railway Group A officer, you need to follow the following Railway Group An officer eligibility criteria: 

  1. Citizen of India
  2. a citizen of Bhutan or a citizen of Nepal or
  3. A Tibetan refugee who entered India before 1st January, 1962 for the purpose of permanently settling in India or
  4. Any person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or the East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of settling permanently in India.
  5. Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (except a citizen of India) mentioned above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.
  6. The candidate for this examination must be of the age of 21 years and not of the age of 30 years. 

Railway Group A Officer Qualification 

  • Completed the degree in  engineering from a university incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as universities under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 or qualified Sections A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India) or
  • Completed the Graduate Membership Examination of the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India) or
  • Completed Associate Membership Examination Parts II and III/Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India or
  • Completed and qualified the Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London, held after November 1959. 

Indian Railways Group A officer selection process 

Basically, for becoming the Railway Group A Officer, you need to go through the following selection process:- 

  1. After the recruitment notification has been announced, eligible candidates can apply through the online application. They can check the UPSC online application portal, and there submit all the important details, educational details, photographs, signatures and supporting documents. 
  2. After that, you must appear for the prelims examination. It is an objective-based examination which has the following topics: general studies, general aptitude, engineering concepts, current affairs and logical reasoning. 
  3. If you qualify for the prelims examination, you are called for the main examination, which is a descriptive examination and test about the deep understanding of the subject and concepts. 
  4. If you qualify the mains examination, the conducting authority calls you for the final round, i.e. Interview or Personality Test. In this, the authority analysis is based on your leadership skills, communication, technical knowledge, decision-making power and other educational achievements. So, you must maintain a confident and balanced personality. The final merit list is prepared on the basis of the mains and interview round, medical examination and document verifications. 
  5. After that the list of the selected candidates is released, and the candidates must undergo the mandatory training programme. The main objective of this training is to make the candidate ready for the leadership roles under various Indian Railways networks.

IRMS Officer Salary

The basic pay for the Railway Group A officer is Rs. 56,100 per month and on the Level 10 pay scale. 

They are also provided other benefits as well, such as dearness allowance, house rent allowance and other allowances. So the in-hand salary ranges between 94,000 and 96,000 per month. 

They are eligible for the yearly promotions, bonus, medical facilities, transport allowance, domestic servant allowance, personal assistant and other benefits. 

Preparation strategy for the ESE 2026 (IRMS)?

  1. Complete Syllabus Coverage: Covering the entire syllabus is one of the important practices to adapt. It is highly recommended that candidates must not attempt any shortcuts to complete the syllabus and have a fair idea about almost all the topics present in the updated syllabus.

No, apart from a degree in engineering, candidates who hold a degree in other disciplines may be eligible for the IRMS (Non-Technical) through the Civil Services Examination. However, the IRMS (Technical) is only for candidates having a degree in engineering.
