What is IRMS?
IRMS full form is Indian Railway Management Service. It is a Group “A” central civil service under the Ministry of Railways, Government of India. IRMS officers manage the technical, operational and administrative functions of Indian Railways. The Indian Railways is one of the largest railway networks in the world.
Earlier, railways used to recruit services like IRSE, IRSME, IRSEE and IRSSE. They were merged into a single unified cadre called IRMS in 2019 to improve coordination and reduce departmental silos within the organization.
IRMS via UPSC ESE 2026
IRMS recruitment for technical/engineering posts is conducted through the UPSC Engineering Services Examination (ESE), also known as IES. This is different from IRMS non-technical posts like Traffic and Personnel, which are filled through the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE). For engineering graduates preparing through the ESE route, IRMS remains one of the most sought after career options along with services such as CPWD, BRO and CWC.
The Union Public Service Commission released the ESE 2026 notification on 26 September 2025. The online application window is open until 16 October 2025. A total of 474 vacancies were announced for ESE 2026 across Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering.

IRMS Eligibility Criteria
IRMS UPSC eligibility criteria are the same as the general ESE eligibility norms. Let us see the IRMS eligibility criteria given below:
- Nationality: Must be a citizen of India
- Educational Qualification: A BE/BTech degree in the relevant engineering discipline (Civil/Mechanical/Electrical/Electronics &Telecommunication) from a recognized university.
- Age Limit: Between 21 and 30 years as on 1 January of the exam year. Relaxations apply for reserved categories as per government guidelines.
- Physical Fitness: Candidates must meet the medical standards prescribed for railway services, many IRMS postings involve field duty.
IRMS Selection Process: Exam Pattern
The IRMS recruitment process for engineering cadres follows the standard UPSC ESE selection pattern. It is conducted in three stages as given below:

- Preliminary Exam: Consists of two papers. Paper I (General Studies & Engineering Aptitude, 200 marks, 2 hours) and Paper II (Engineering discipline-specific, 300 marks, 3 hours). Both papers are objective in nature.
- Mains Exam: Consists of two conventional papers based on the candidate’s chosen engineering discipline, worth 300 marks each.
- Personality Test/Interview: The final stage is worth 200 marks. The final round checks if the candidate is suitable for this role or not.
There is negative marking in the Preliminary exam. One-third of the marks are deducted for every wrong answer in both Paper I and Paper II. There is no penalty for unattempted questions. The Main exam is descriptive and carries no negative marking.
IRMS Salary and Perks
IRMS Salary is a major draw for engineering graduates considering this career path. IRMS officers are placed at Pay Level 10 of the 7th Pay Commission Matrix. The basic pay is INR 56,100 per month. Along with basic pay, officers receive Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), Transport Allowance and other benefits.
Beyond salary, IRMS officers enjoy perks such as accommodation and transport for eligible postings. Medical facilities under CGHS/railway health schemes. They also receive Leave Travel Concession (LTC), pension, gratuity and other benefits.

As per the official ESE 2026 calendar:
- The UPSC ESE Mains 2026 result was declared on 24 July 2026, followed by the Personality Test/Interview.
- The Interview is expected to take in place between September and October 2026.
- Final results and service allocation including IRMS postings are expected later in 2026.
