MAHATRANSCO: Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Co. Limited

Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (MAHATRANSCO) is an entirely owned commodity of the Govt. of Maharashtra. It was included under the Companies Act, after the rearrangement and reorganisation of the erstwhile MSEB (Maharashtra State Electricity Board). This was done for the conveyance of electricity from its place of Generation to the point of Distribution.

It has the complete control of Maharashtra’s Electric Power Transmission System. MAHATRANSCO has an operating capability of 39871 Circuit KM of transmission lines and 559 EHV Substation which together have 89178 MVA transformation capability. The huge network of electricity transmission infrastructure covers almost all of the inter-regional electric power transmission system and a large part of the intra region electricity transmission as well. MSETCL had a turnover of Rs.3968.35/- cores in the year 2017-18.

The uniqueness of the company lies in the fact that it is the only power utility in the state sector that owns HVDC lines. It operates a 752 km long, 1500 MW, 500 KV bi-polar HVDC line from Chandrapur to Padghe. This is a milestone achievement as electric power is generated in east Maharashtra, due to abundance of coal, but, the bulk use of power is in the western part of Maharashtra in cities like Mumbai, Pune and Nashik. The HDVC lines enable power transmission without loss. Consequently, the power transmitted to Padghe is near about the same as that generated at Chandrapur.

The centre for load dispatch is the main centre from where monitoring of operation and control of the power system. SLDC Kalwa situated near Mumbai is entirely computer-controlled and has modern technical facilities. Mahatransco also owns a Load Dispatch centre in Ambazari situated near Nagpur.

Future vision of MAHATRANSCO

With a huge population and on-going development, the demand of electricity supply has been ever-increasing in India. And Maharashtra being one of the largest state has a major share in the demand of power supply.  MAHATRANSCO is responsible for the power supply covering a major part of Maharashtra. To meet the inflated demand in future, MAHATRANSCO keeps coming up with new projects and innovative ideas. It has recently implemented a robust expansion plan to meet the evacuation and grid strengthening needs of the future. The company has adopted the method of predictive maintenance where it takes measures to rectify any upcoming problems in transmission or generation. This ensures unhindered transmission of electricity.

To set up an intensive communication network with the use of already existing infrastructure, an Optic Fibre communication system of about 2801 km has been installed and some work is still going on the system. It has also made experimental use of unmanned remotely controlled substations at two locations and GIS substations at Bhandup and Hinjewadi. In order to generate capital for its projects and avoid the burden of interests on loans, it has planned to launch an IPO.  It has commenced an aspiring task of founding of a 765 KV substation at Aurangabad. The State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC) at Kalwa and Ambazari are also being reconditioned and updated.
