Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) is an Indian oil and natural gas company with its headquarters at Mumbai, Maharashtra. Among the public sector companies, it has about 25% market-share in India and strong marketing infrastructure. Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, also the promoter of the company, owns 51.11% shares in HPCL and others are distributed amongst financial institutes, public and other investors. Products:

HPCL is an oil and natural gas company dealing in various products like:

  • Petrol: Known as motor spirit in the oil industry. HPCL markets the product through its retail pumps all over India. Its principle consumers are personal vehicle owners.
  • Diesel: Known as high speed diesel in the oil industry. Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited markets the products through its retail pumps as well as terminals and depots. Its consumers are regular auto owners, transport agencies, industries, etc.
  • Lubricants: HPCL is the market leader in lubricants and associated products. It commands over 30% of market share in this sector.
  • Liquefied petroleum gas: The HPCL brand of LPG is a popular brand across India for domestic and industrial uses.
  • Aviation turbine fuel: With major air service facilities in all major airports of India, HPCL is a key player in this sector supplying ATF to major airlines. It has an accomplishment of sorts to supply fuel to US.
  • Emulsions

Refineries

An oil refinery or petroleum refinery is an industrial process plant where crude oil is transformed and refined into more useful products such as petroleum naphtha, gasoline, diesel fuel, asphalt base, heating oil, kerosene, liquefied petroleum gas, jet fuel and fuel oils.

HPCL has a number of refineries in India. Some are listed below:

  • Mumbai Refinery: 7.5 million metric tonnes (MMT) capacity
  • Visakhapatnam Refinery: 8.3 MMT at Visakhapatnam
  • Mangalore Refinery Petrochemicals Ltd.: 9.69 MMT at Mangalore, Karnataka (HPCL has a 16.65% stake).
  • Guru Gobind Singh Refinery: 9 MMT at Bathinda, Punjab (HPCL and Mittal Energy each have a 49% stake).
  • Barmer Refinery: It is planned for 9 MMT capacity. It is a joint venture with the Rajasthan Government.

Recruitment:

The Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited recruits engineers from various streams into the organisation for different posts. Some of the posts for which engineers are recruited along with basic eligibility criteria are:

1. Engineer:

  • Educational Qualifications: All the qualifications should be 4-year full time regular course/s from AICTE approved / UGC recognised University/Deemed University. The courses offered by Autonomous Institutions should be equivalent to the relevant courses approved/recognised by Association of Indian Universities (AIU)/UGC/AICTE)

At the time of filling the application form or applying Gen/OBC (NCL), category candidates must have secured 60% aggregate marks, while SC/ST/PwD candidates should have secured minimum 50% aggregate marks till the last semester examination

For Selection However, the condition for the final year students is that they should submit their final mark sheet.

Non-eligible candidates: Candidates who have studied Automobile Engineering, Production Engineering, Mechatronics, Industrial Engineering, Construction Engineering, etc are not eligible.

  • Minimum marks: For the UR, OBCNC, the Minimum marks for eligibility are 60% marks (aggregate marks of all semesters) in qualifying degree examinations

Whereas for the SC, ST, PWD, the minimum marks for eligibility is 50% marks (aggregate marks of all semesters) in qualifying degree examinations.

  • Age: The upper age limit for the general candidates is 25 years. Special relaxation is provided to special categories.

SC, ST, OBCNC, PWD: Age relaxation for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)/SC/ST/PWD candidates will be applicable as per the Presidential Directives.

Relaxation to different category candidates as follows

  • 5 years for SC & ST
  • 3 years for OBC-NC
  • 10 years for PWD (UR)
  • 13 years for PWD (OBC-NC)
  • 15 years for PWD (SC/ST) candidates

Candidates domiciled in the State of Jammu & Kashmir during January 1, 1981 to December 31, 1990 can avail relaxation up to 5 years

Ex-servicemen & Commissioned Officers (including ECOs/ SSCOs) – 5 years’ relaxation subject to rendering minimum 5 years of service in Armed Forces and fulfillment of other conditions prescribed by the Government of India

  • Selection Procedure: There are 3 stages of selection for HPCL.

Stage 1: Shortlisting -Category-wise discipline wise merit list based on GATE 2024 marks (85% weightage)

Stage 2: Pre Selection- Selection tools like Group Discussion (GD) & Personal Interviews (PI) etc. (15% weightage)

Stage 3: Final Selection – Based on Medical Fitness as per company policy

  • HPCL Vacancy Details:

Selected candidates have to undergo one year of training (mandatory) post which they will be absorbed as Officers at HPCL. Candidates can be posted for shift duties in any SBU/Division/Department of the PSU at any place in the country/otherwise.

  • Training & Probation

For 1 year from the date of joining, the selected Officers will be on Probation. Post successful training completion, they will be confirmed as officers in Grade A. Confirmation letters will be given to them subject to complying with satisfactory performance, attendance requirements, verification of antecedents, verification of caste status/certificate and caste validity wherever applicable and qualifying in technical competency test and project. Rs. 5000 will be deducted as retention amount during the first six months of probation. This amount will be refunded after confirmation.

  • Pay Scale and Perks

On joining, the candidates will also be entitled to additional benefits as applicable. Besides Basic Pay, they will be entitled to allowance at 50% of Basic Pay under Cafeteria Approach (including medical benefits for self and family members), Dearness Allowance, HRA and retirement Benefits up to 30% of Basic Pay & DA which include Contributory Provident Fund, Gratuity, and Superannuation Benefit applicable as per Corporation’s policy in force at that time. Apart from this, Performance Related Pay (PRP) is also paid to them as per the PSU’s policy.

Basic Salary:       60,000 – 1,80,000

Approx CTC: 16.7 Lacs

  • Cut-Off –

GATE Cut-Off for HPCL recruitment is the marks/score required by the candidates in order to be considered eligible for recruitment. Based on the number of vacancies, the GATE score of candidates the cut off score varies every year. The cut-off marks for various years have been listed below:

  • Experience: Minimum 3 years’ experience in Operations/Process in a Large Petrochemical plant or a Major Petrochemical Unit within a petroleum refinery (having turnover of Rs. 500 crores or more) in the areas of
    • Handling normal operations, plant start-up, and shutdowns
    • Operations of large compressors / blowers / pumps / furnaces/ incinerators
    • Handling chilled water/refrigeration systems
    • Trouble shooting of unit operation, commissioning of units
    • Control systems and with a thorough knowledge and understanding of the P&ID/PFDs
    • Process safety & safety standards
    • Storage and handling of petrochemicals in specially designed storage tanks
    • Process optimization and troubleshooting of process units related issues
    • Petrochemicals dispatch in Tankers/Iso Containers and drums including drumming operations
    • Hazop and risk analysis and design standards/guidelines
    • Process specifications of equipment like columns, vessels, furnaces/burners, heat exchangers, pumps, compressors, measuring and control instruments, heat-mass balance, piping, safety / statutory requirements, etc.
    • Pre-commissioning checks, commissioning assistance

The experience has to be in the supervisor / executive capacity only. Candidates with experience in other process industries than those mentioned will not be considered.

  • Roles & Responsibilities:

The HPCL Vacancy involves working in three shifts as a field supervisor or control panel (DCS) supervisor in process plants, utility section and tank farm management.

  • Responsible for safe operation of plant
  • Lead a team of technicians
  • Handle plant start up/shut downs and emergency issues.
  • Trouble shooting and resolving operational issues, etc.
