Mechanical Engineering: IES/ESE 2020 Prelims | PAPER and CUT-OFF Analysis
The Prelims stage of Engineering Services Examination (ESE) 2020 IES was conducted on 5th January, 2020. The exam was conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for the selection in Indian Engineering Services (IES). Mr. B. Singh, CMD MADE EASY, along with the Mechanical Engineering faculties has analysed the question paper for the students. In this article, we will be sharing detailed review of the paper and what should be the future strategy for the students. The trend of the paper has been constantly shifting in the past few years. Leaving any portion of the syllabus can cost heavily in this scenario.
Now let’s discuss about the subject wise analysis of Mechanical Engineering of ESE 2020 Prelims paper:
Theory of Machines: There were only 12 questions asked from this subject. The questions were a bit in the easier level. Almost all the areas of the syllabus have been covered.
Must Read: All You Need to Know about Theory of Machines
Strength of Material: The number of questions remained the same as compared to the last year i.e. 17. However, the questions were unevenly distributed and the focus was mainly on four topics. The questions were very simple and straightforward.
Material Science: In total there were 11 questions out of which, 3 questions were of numerical type. The level of questions was similar to those taught in our classroom program.
IC Engine: Six questions were asked this time. All the questions were easy and almost the entire syllabus was covered.
Thermodynamics: Total 4 questions were asked. The level of questions was very easy. Almost all the questions were similar to previous year questions.
HMT: Total 5 questions were asked in the paper. All the 5 topics were covered. The questions were easy and can be solved in the given amount of time. However, there was one question which do required the use calculator.
Production Engineering: Total number of questions asked was five. There were 2 numerical type questions and 3 questions were theoretical. The focus has shifted to Mechatronics and Robotics which are the new topics.
Robotics: There were four questions from Robotics. The questions were as per the expectation and didn’t deviate too much from the syllabus.
Mechatronics: Every year there has been a rise in the number of questions asked form this subject. Twelve questions were asked from this subject. It is a very high scoring subject if prepared nicely.
Machine Design: This year 8 questions have been asked. The questions were very straightforward and were conceptual.
Industrial Engineering: Total 5 questions were asked this year and 3 were them from the core Industrial Engineering part while 2 questions were from Quality Control. The level of questions was easy and could be easily solved.
Power Plant: This is a very important for IES and 18 questions were asked form this subject. There were only 2 questions which were a bit tricky. There were 5 questions which were numerical in nature.
RAC: This time 9 questions were asked. The questions were easy and the numerical questions could be solved without the use calculators.
Renewable Energy: 12 questions have been asked and out of them 80% were theoretical type questions. Almost all the chapters have been touched in this subject.
Fluid Mechanics: This year 12 questions were asked form this subject. The questions were very easy. The questions have touched all the parts of the syllabus. This year questions could be done without the use of calculators. 9 questions were asked from Fluid Machines also and they were straightforward in nature.
If we take a comprehensive overview of the question paper then, the paper was much easier than the last year. To get a more in-depth analysis of the paper and success strategy from Mr. B. Singh, please watch the video given below:
