PGCIL Engineer Trainee Recruitment through GATE 2025

POWERGRID is a major public sector company in India, under the Ministry of Power. It is responsible for managing the country’s power transmission system, including planning, coordination, and control of the inter-state transmission network and national power grids.

POWERGRID runs about 1,78,195 kilometers of transmission lines, operates 278 Sub-Stations, and carries about 50% of total power generated in the country through its transmission networks. It also owns a telecom network that covers around 1,00,000 kilometers, with presence in about 3,000 locations and an intra-city network in 500 cities across the country.

With strong expertise in power transmission, distribution, and telecom, POWERGRID provides consultancy services both in India and internationally. The company has been profitable since it began, with a gross revenue of ₹45,815.37 crores and a net profit of ₹15,474.61 crores in the 2023-24 financial year.

POWERGRID is aiming to grow even more and is looking to hire talented, dedicated, and energetic engineering graduates as Engineer Trainees in Electrical, Electronics, Civil, or Computer Science fields through GATE 2025.

Graduates who plan to continue their studies using their GATE 2025 scores or need extra time to join if selected should not apply.

POWERGRID may also use the GATE 2025 scores to hire for other positions or for its subsidiaries, depending on the need.

Vacancies & Reservation

Details of number of vacancies and reservation shall be indicated in the notification to be published on our website before commencement of Online Registration. However, reservation shall be provided to OBC(NCL)/EWS/SC/ST/PwBD candidates depending on the number of vacancies and as per Govt. of India Directives.

A. Valid Score in the GATE 2025

Candidates must have taken the relevant GATE 2025 exam as shown in the table below and passed it. The qualifying marks will be determined by the GATE 2025 organizing body.

  1. Reservation, relaxation, and concessions for OBC (NCL), SC, ST, EWS, PwBD, Ex-SM, J&K Domiciled, and victims of riots will be provided as per Government of India directives.
  2. Only individuals with at least 40% of the relevant disability will be eligible for PwBD benefits.
  3. Relaxation in Marks in essential qualification for SC/ST/PwBD candidates:
    Qualifying Marks in essential qualification is relaxed to pass marks for posts reserved for the respective category/PwBD Category as per the final detailed advertisement to be issued before commencement of online registration.
  1. Relaxation in Upper Age Limit:

a) For OBC(NCL) candidates 3 years (for posts reserved for the respective category)
b) For SC/ST candidates 5 years (for posts reserved for the respective category)
c) For PwBD candidates 10 years over and above category relaxation
d) Ex-Servicemen/ Victims of riots As per Govt. of India directives

 

  1. Reservation/ Relaxation / Concession for SC / ST will be subject to submission of relevant Caste Certificate in the prescribed format issued by a competent authority.
  2. Relaxation / Concession for Victims of riots/Ex-SM will be as per Govt. of India Guidelines in this regard.
  3. Reservation and Relaxation for OBC (NCL) will be subject to submission of a copy of the latest OBC (NCL) certificate in the format prescribed by the Govt. of India for “Appointment to posts under Govt. of India” from a competent authority at the time of application and interview, if called for. The OBC candidates applying for the post must produce OBC (Non- Creamy Layer) certificate based on the income for the Financial Year (FY) 2021-2022, 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 and issued on/after 01.04.2024 (after the completion of FY 2023-24).
  4. Reservation for EWS will be subject to submission of a copy of the latest Income and Asset Certificate issued by a Competent Authority at time of application and interview, if shortlisted. A candidate will be eligible to get the benefit of the Economically Weaker Section reservation only in case the candidate meets the criteria issued by the Central Government and is in possession of requisite Income & Asset Certificate based on income for Financial Year (FY) 2023-2024 and issued on/after 01.04.2024 (after the completion of FY 2023-24).
  5. Reservation / Relaxation / Concession for Persons with Benchmark Disability is subject to submission of medical certificate in prescribed format in support of permanent disability issued by the Government Medical Board at the time of application and interview, if called for.
  6. In case Caste/Category certificate is issued in a language other than Hindi or English, candidates are required to produce a certified translation of the same in either Hindi or English language at the time of Document Verification, if called for.
  7. SC/ST/PwBD/Ex-SM candidates are exempted from payment of application fee.

Trainees working in POWERGRID shall not be considered as Departmental Candidate. Departmental candidates may please refer to Internal Circular before filling up the application for further details.

Selection Process

The selection process includes marks obtained (out of 100) in the corresponding paper of GATE 2025, followed by Group Discussion (GD) and a Personal Interview.

Eligible candidates must appear for GATE 2025 in the relevant paper, such as Electrical Engineering (EE), Electronics and Communication (EC), Civil Engineering (CE), or Computer Science Engineering (CS). Only those who qualify in the GATE 2025 paper will be considered for the next stage of selection. The qualifying marks for GATE 2025 will be decided by the exam authority.

Qualified candidates will be shortlisted for Group Discussion and Personal Interview based on their normalized GATE 2025 Score (out of 100), with the shortlist prepared category-wise.

Candidates can choose to participate in the GD/Interview in either Hindi or English.

Candidates can check their status through their login on the POWERGRID Online Application System. Shortlisted candidates will be able to download their interview call letter and other necessary documents via the candidate login.

Those selected for Group Discussion and Interview must bring the required documents as specified in their interview call letter.

Candidates must qualify in the Personal Interview in order to be considered for empanelment. The qualifying % in interview for different categories is as mentioned below:

Group discussion will not have any Qualifying Marks.

Weightage of Different Parameters

For calculation of final score of a candidate for empanelment, the weightages of marks obtained in GATE 2025, Group Discussion and Interview shall be as indicated below:

Empanelment of Candidates

Candidates shortlisted for GD and interview may have to undergo psychometric assessment results of which shall be used as an input during the interview. Candidates who qualify in the Personal Interview will only be adjudged suitable for empanelment. Therefore, it is again reiterated that candidates will have to qualify in GATE 2025 and in Personal Interview separately in order to be considered eligible for empanelment.

Please note that only GATE 2025 score (Normalized Marks out of 100) is valid for this recruitment process. GATE score of 2024 or prior is not valid.

The offer of appointment shall be issued to the suitable candidates in the order of category wise merit and based on the requirement. Selected candidates shall be notified through their login in Online application system.

Appointment of selected candidates will be subject to their being found medically fit in the Pre – Employment Medical Examination to be conducted as per POWERGRID Norms and Standards of Medical Fitness.

Health

Compensation Package

The Corporation provides a highly competitive compensation package, ranking among the best in the industry. Selected candidates will be placed in a pay scale of ₹ 40,000/- – 3% – ₹ 1,40,000 (IDA) during their one-year training period. During this time, they will receive a basic salary of ₹ 40,000, along with IDA, HRA, and perks amounting to 12% of the basic pay. The estimated annual CTC is as follows:

During Training ₹ 10.70 lakhs
After successful completion of Training ₹ 21.40 lakhs

 

The CTC shall vary depending on location of posting and other terms and conditions of appointment.

On successful completion of training, the candidates will be absorbed as Engineer in E2 scale – ₹ 50,000/- 3%- ₹ 1,60,000/- (IDA).

On regularization, Compensation package includes Basic Pay, Dearness Allowance, Perquisites and Allowance as per cafeteria approach, Performance Related Pay, Company Leased Accommodation / Company Quarters or HRA, Reimbursement of monthly conveyance expenditure, digital services reimbursement, uniform, laptop facility, PF, Gratuity, Pension & Leave encashment, Group Insurance, Group Personal Accident Insurance, etc.

The Corporation also offers excellent facilities like Short- and Long-term Loans & Advances in subsidized rates including House Building Advance, Medical facilities for self and dependents, etc. to its regular employees in accordance with the policies of the organization from time to time.

Service Agreement Bond

The selected candidates will be required to execute a service agreement bond to successfully complete the prescribed training period and thereafter serve the organization for at least three years. The amount of the bond is ₹ 5,00,000/- for General/ OBC (NCL)/EWS candidates and ₹ 2,50,000/- for SC/ST/PwBD candidates.

Important Instructions for Registration/ Application

  1. Candidates must register and show up for the GATE 2025 equivalent paper.
  2. Please visit https://gate2025.iitr.ac.in/ for more information about GATE 2025.
  3. A separate notification will be posted on our website in early February 2025, providing details about the number of vacancies, reservations, and crucial instructions regarding the submission of the POWERGRID online application and the date of the interview, among other things.
  4. The POWERGRID application window will ostensibly open in February or March 2025. The GATE 2025 Application No., GATE 2025 Registration Number, and other necessary information must be entered by candidates online at the POWERGRID website. These details are available in the CAREER area of www.powergrid.in.
  5. SC/ST/PwBD/ Ex-SM/ Departmental candidates are exempted from payment of application You are required to login to your candidate login section and then deposit non- refundable application fees of ₹ 500/- through online mode only. On submission of application fees, your application process will be treated as complete.
  6. Candidates will be required to retain their GATE 2025 Admit card and GATE 2025 Score card for verification at the time of GD/ Interview /pre-employment medical examination/ Joining in POWERGRID.

General Information and Instructions

  1. Only Indian Nationals of age 18 years or above are eligible to apply for POWERGRID.
  2. Before applying, the candidate should ensure that he / she fulfills the eligibility criteria and other norms mentioned in this advertisement.
  3. Essential qualification should be recognized in India and from a recognized Institution or University.
  4. Vacancies are for requirement all over the country, mostly on-site Selected candidates shall be assigned for OJT and final postings accordingly. Candidates are liable to be posted at the discretion of management to serve at any of the company’s offices / establishments / Subsidiaries/ JVs/ units or any other government departments, statutory body or public sector undertaking anywhere in India or abroad.

  6. Date of issuance of final mark sheet shall be taken as the date of acquiring qualification.
  7. Wherever CGPA/OGPA/DGPA or Letter Grade in a degree / diploma is awarded, its equivalent percentage of marks must be indicated in the application form as per norms adopted by University / Institute.
  8. Percentage of marks obtained by the candidate in the bachelor’s degree shall be calculated based on the practice followed by the university/institution from where the candidate has obtained the In case the candidates are awarded grades/CGPA instead of marks, the conversion of grades/CGPA to percentage of marks shall be based on the procedure certified by the university/ institution from where they have obtained the bachelor’s degree.
    In case the university/ institution does not have any scheme for converting CGPA into equivalent marks, the equivalence would be established by dividing the candidate’s CGPA by the maximum possible CGPA and multiplying the result with 100.
  9. Candidates working in organizations / PSU are required to produce “No Objection Certificate” at the time of Interview.
  10. Candidates claiming reservation under OBC (NCL) should belong to OBC- Non-creamy layer as on last date of online submission of application to POWERGRID.
  11. Candidates claiming reservation under EWS should belong to EWS as on last date of online submission of application to POWERGRID.
  12. Candidates selected in POWERGRID are liable to be posted anywhere in India and Abroad.
