Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) is an Indian state-owned electric utility company headquartered in Gurugram, India. POWERGRID transmits about 50% of the total power generated in India on its transmission network. Its former subsidiary company, Power System Operation Corporation Limited (POSOCO), handles power management for National Grid and all state transmission utilities. POWERGRID also operates a telecom business under the name POWERTEL. Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWER GRID) started functioning on a management basis with effect from August 1991, and subsequently, it took over transmission assets from NTPC, NHPC, NEEPCO, NLC, NPC, THDC, SJVNL, etc. in a phased manner, and it commenced commercial operation in 1992-93.

Power Grid Corporation of India Limited is a schedule ‘A’, Maharatna PSU under the Ministry of Power, Govt. of India, with 51.34% held by the Government of India and the rest held by institutional investors and the public. The company was incorporated on 23rd October 1989 under the Company Act, 1956. Based on its performance, POWERGRID was recognized as a Mini-Ratna Category-I Public Sector Undertaking in October 1998 and conferred the status of “Navratna” by the Government of India in May 2008. Power Grid is India’s largest electric power transmission utility.

POWERGRID operates around 178,195 ckm of transmission lines along with 278 substations and wheels about 50% of the total power generated in the country through its transmission networks.

POWERGRID also owns & operates around approximately 100,000 km of telecom network, with points of presence in approx. 3000 and intra-city networks in 500 cities across India.

POWERGRID, with its strong in-house expertise in various facets of the transmission, sub-transmission, distribution, and telecom sectors, also offers consultancy services at national and international levels.

According to its mandate, the Corporation, apart from providing a transmission system for evacuation of central sector power, is also responsible for the establishment and operation of regional and national power grids to facilitate the transfer of power within and across the regions with reliability, security, and economy on sound commercial principles. POWERGRID, as the Central Transmission Utility of the country, is playing a major role in the Indian Power Sector and is also providing open access to its interstate transmission system.

  • 2024

Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi dedicated the following projects worth ₹ 900 crore on February 16, 2024:

  1. Transmission System strengthening scheme for evacuation of power from SEZ in Rajasthan (8.1 GW) under Phase-II Part A.
  2. Transmission System for providing connectivity to RE projects at Bikaner (PG), Fatehgarh-II & Bhadla–II.
  • 2023

  1. POWERGRID has commissioned the second intra-state transmission project in the state of Uttar Pradesh viz. Rampur Sambhal Transmission Limited (PRSTL).
  2. First time in India 6.6 GW power has been transferred through ±800kV Raigarh – Pugalur HVDC link.
  3. Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the project “Green Energy Corridor (GEC) Phase-II – Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) for 13 GW Renewable Energy Project in Ladakh”. The project is targeted to be set up by FY 2029-30 with total estimated cost of Rs. 20,773.70 crore and Central Financial Assistance (CFA) @ 40% of project cost i.e. Rs.8,309.48 crore for the project. POWERGRID has been assigned as an implementing agency for this project.
  • 2022

  1. REMC Telangana has been commissioned and thereby all REMs assigned to POWERGRID are now operational.
  2. 400KV, D/C, Jeerat (New) – Subhasgram (PM-JTL-TBCB) (214 CKM) implemented by PGCIL, commissioned in Aug’22.
  • 2021

  1. POWERGRID Infrastructure Investment Trust (PGInvIT) : 1st InvIT sponsored by a CPSE and largest public offer by any InvIT/ REIT of ₹ 7,734.99 crore successfully launched by POWERGRID.
  2. Bipole-I (3000 MW) of ±800 kV Raigarh – Pugalur HVDC transmission line commissioned.
  3. First time in India, Voltage Source Convertor (VSC) Technology: Monopole 1 & 2 of ±320kV VSC based HVDC terminals and associated ± 320 kV HVDC Pugalur – North Thrissur transmission line.
  4. The Raigarh – Pugalur – Thrissur 6000MW Mega HVDC Project has been completed.
  5. Ministry of Power, Government of India, has re-designated the prestigious 220kV Srinagar – Leh Transmission System (SLTS) Via Drass – Kargil & Khalasti as Inter State Transmission System(ISTS).
  6. POWERGRID has put 250th substation (765/400 kV Khetri substation) in remote operation from NTAMC
  • 2020

  1. Commissioned ± 800 kV Champa – Kurukshetra HVDC station Bipole-II
  2. Commissioned Pole-I of the 6000 MW Raigarh- Pugalur HVDC
  3. Completed commissioning of 11 Renewable Energy Management Centres (REMCs) for renewable energy integration for Govt. of India
  4. Strong and humane response to the COVID-19 pandemic
  5. Commissioned India’s first indigenously developed 400 kV Optical Current Transformer in collaboration with BHEL
  6. Started the process for monetization through InvIT, the first InvIT from a Govt. entity

Every year PGCIL releases notification for engineer trainee on the basis of GATE score. Candidates who are under the age of 28 years are eligible for this recruitment. Candidates should have minimum 60% marks in their engineering degree.

The selection process includes shortlisting on the basis of GATE score followed by Group Discussion and Personal Interview.

The package for engineer trainee during training its Rs 10.70 lakh while during training its Rs 10.70 lakh.
