Coal India Limited, popularly known as CIL, is a Maharatna company that came into being in November 1975. The company is an Indian state-controlled coal mining company headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Currently, Shri PM Prasad is the Chairman-cum-Managing Director of CIL.
CIL is the largest coal-producing company in the world and one of the largest corporate employers, with a manpower of 220,242 (as of 1st April 2025). As per recent information, CIL operates in eight states, having a total of 85 mining areas. CIL manages a total of 310 working mines, consisting of 129 underground, 168 opencast, and 13 mixed mines, and also manages other establishments like workshops, hospitals, and so on.

Coal India Limited has fourteen wholly owned subsidiaries. These are Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), Western Coalfields Limited (WCL), South-Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), Northern Coalfield Limited (NCL), Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Limited (CMPDIL), CIL Navi Karniya Urja Limited, CIL Solar PV Limited, Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Ltd, Coal Gas India Ltd, CIL Rajasthan Akshay Urja Limited, and Coal India Africana Limitada (CIAL).
Other than these, CIL has five joint venture companies: Hindustan Urvarak & Rasayan Limited, Talcher Fertilizers Ltd., CIL NTPC Urja Pvt. Ltd., Coal Lignite Urja Vikas Private Limited & International Coal Venture Private Limited.
CIL Production, growth and contribution
Coal India Limited contributes to around 80% of the domestic coal production and ¾ of the total coal-based generation. Coal India Limited also contributes to 55% of the total power generation of India. Other than this, CIL also holds the record of operating Asia’s largest opencast coal mine at Gevra, SECL.
If we talk about production and growth, CIL ended the last year with the production of 781 MT of coal. The total coal supplies for the year 2024-24 (763.06 MT) surpassed the total coal supplies of 2024-24 (753.51 MT). All the coal production units of CIL have recorded positive growth. Five of them—BCCL, CCL, NCL, WCL, and MCL—have even stepped over their respective annual targets for the second consecutive year. Odisha-based CIL subsidiary Mahanadi Coalfields Limited has emerged as the country’s first coal-producing company to have breached 200 MT with production at 206.1 MT.
CIL Projects
Currently there are 117 ongoing coal projects with a sanctioned capacity of 978.90 MT and sanctioned capital of 140389.40 Crore. These projects are in different stages of implementation. In 2024-25 these projects contributed 521 MT of coal production.
During 2024-25, 13 mining projects with sanctioned capital of 45368.79 crore and sanctioned capacity of 152.17 MT have been approved by CIL and the subsidiary board.
CIL careers
Generally Coal India Limited recruits talented candidates every year for the post of Graduate Engineer Trainee (GET)/Management Trainee (MT). The recruitment for Graduate Engineer Trainee (GET)/Management Trainee (MT) is done either on the basis of CBT marks or on the basis of GATE scores. In this blog, we would look at the cut-off score of different branches on the basis of the GATE 2024 score.
CIL invites applications to recruit the GATE-qualified candidates for the post of management trainees. The GATE applicants are eligible to apply for Coal India Limited Recruitment. The recruitment is for various branches of engineering, like mining, electrical, mechanical, civil, electronics and telecommunication, IT etc.
The upper age limit for the Coal India Management Trainee is 30 years for General (UR) category candidates. However, some relaxations are also provided like:
- Upper age relaxation for SC/ST candidates is 5 years.
- Upper age relaxation for the OBC candidates (non-creamy layer) is 3 years while there is no age relaxation for the OBC creamy layer.
- Upper age relaxation for the PWD-UR is 10 years, PWD-OBC (non-creamy layer) is 13 years and for PWD-SC/ST candidates the relaxation is 15 years. There is no age relaxation for the OBC creamy layer.
There is no age limit and no application fee for candidates working in Coal India Limited or any of its subsidiary companies.
Candidates belonging to Jammu & Kashmir who were domiciled ordinarily in that state between 01.01.1980 and 31.12.1989 have 5-year relaxation in the upper age limit.

Important points:
- The examination is a Computer Based Online Test total of 3 hours. It consists of two papers: General Awareness and Professional Knowledge.
- The paper is an objective type paper with multiple choice answers in each paper.

Surety Bond:
All the candidates selected for the post of Management Trainee under Coal India Limited must sign a surety bond.
They will have to serve the corporation for a minimum period of 60 months. The selected candidates sign a bond of Rs. 3 lakhs with Coal India Limited.
The respective department deducts an amount of Rs. 5000 from the selected candidate’s salary for 60 months, which will be refunded with interest on completion of 60 months.
Training:
All the Management Trainee candidates selected have to undergo intensive training for the prescribed duration before posting on the job. The Corporation has the right to increase or reduce the training period at its discretion for the trainees.
Probation: The selected candidates (on regular posts) on appointment will be on probation for one year.
In case the corporation finds the candidate’s performance unsatisfactory, it has the right to terminate the candidate’s service during the probation under the terms and conditions of the offer of appointment and receipt of a satisfactory police report.
The candidates can be posted anywhere in the subsidiary companies, especially in coalfield areas.
